Split those flights!
ive done this enough times to know it works. ridiculously, I can;t book my flights until last minute in case a fire gig pops up.
SO i could get screwed on last minute price hikes. Whatever your reason for waiting last minute, DONT lay down and die at an ultra expensive flight you HAVE to take.
Try this one:
Find your best worst flight scenario on a bulk flight warehouse, like orbitz. In fact, try all of them.
Note the top 3 carriers who can get you where you want to go~forget about the price, just pick the cheapest.
That tells you WHO is going your way.
Note: The prices are high on your chosen dates most likely because ONE of those dates is either sold out or in high demand.
Next, go to the Official site of those top airlines. Search "One Way" flights in either direction,
and +/- one day if you can afford to do it.
What you're likely to find, is that ONE AIRLINE has a real steal headed one way, and a complete ripoff in the other.
You'll be surprised to find that one of the other airlines has the same scenario, but in reverse!
Last minute, thank me when you get a round trip cross country ticket for $199 instead of $480 or something ridiculous like that
SIMPLY by splitting flights.
search one way flights in either direction
