Rental cars 101: Reserve away! With Reckless abandon & much more
Ok, so it's a week away from a major trip you totally put off until the last minute. ( or is that just me?)
You dont quite know your flight path since youre looking for the cheapest flight, and you dont know which airport youre flying into yet.
Who cares?
Get online and rent some damn cars!

You might think you dont need a car, and you can get around by public transit, andrely on your friends, but when cars re as cheap and accesible as they are, WHY NOT GET A CAR!?

( my preference is Orbitz for rental cars, then searching the home URL of the cheapest carrier)
Here's the thing: You dont actually PAY for the car until you pick it up! so the # of cars and places you can reserve from is unlimited!
Jsut keep an excel sheet or similar for the reservation #s locations and the economy car type you reserved so you dont look like a reservation whore going in.

NOTE I said ECONOMY car. Why?
a) its cheap, and you can find em for like $10-12$ a day (WOW!) if you look in the right places.
b) 9 times out of 10, theyre OUT of economy cars, and they bump you up to the next level.

More often than not, Im driving out of there with a Mustang, or other very pimp car.

NOTES ON PICKING UP YOUR CAR:
1) If you are in a long line, let EVERYONE you can in front of you. Chances are, they will get the last economy car. Its hilarious when they point out the guy who got the last one, walking off with the keys.
2) Once they tell you that they're out of your preferred car type, ask to peruse the lot for a suitable car you like from the available class.

Seriously: There are some major cool pimpin finds in the midsize class. But you wont know until you get out there.

***********
WANT TO FLY OUT FROM ANOTHER STATE?
try this one on.
When you're searching the lot, look for a car in you class with a license plate of the state you want to go to.
Talk to the manager, and let them know you wish to provide them the altruistic service of "returning" their car to its home state.
In exchange for waiving the dropoff fee.
NOTE: this actually saves the car company $$ from otherwise having to pay a courier service to get the car back to its proper inventory area,
and you can save the $75 fee attached to any rental car dropped off in a different location it was rented from.
